Kay Doliver is a pseudonym that I use for writing books. The name I was born with is Darlene Oliver. I have an A.A. in Business Administration from Golden West University in Huntington Beach, California. where I also received certificates in Staff Accounting, General Management, and Human Resource Management. I can credit that college for helping me discover my love of writing which will last for the rest of my life. I am also a graduate of Bellevue University in Nebraska where I received my Bachelor's in Human Resource Management. That wonderful establishment challenged me and taught me to think strategically.
In addition to my education, I have over fifteen years of experience working in office administration and management and assisting in a variety of industries, both nonprofit and for profit, and in a few capacities which included managing accounting departments, learning the ins and outs of financial statements, cashflow forecasting, .and working with contracts. I spent many years working with executives, and in management being part of and leading teams, and working with customers and vendors at all levels, I can say that my career has been an adventure. One with many unexpected dips, twists, and turns.
One of the most notable twists began in 2009 when I ended up unemployed and trying to make ends meet, just like so many others at that time. I had spent over a decade working in management and had owned a large landscape business in the past, so I had plenty of experience to draw on for my job search, but I was still falling short of an actual job offer. It was not going well at all.
By January 2010, I was still unemployed and seriously worried. I delivered my youngest daughter that month. What should have been a joyous and exciting event was overshadowed by fear due to my circumstances. Many sleepless nights ensued causing me to pace floors. I alternated between determined and feeling helpless, powerless, and clueless as to how to turn it around. I did not realize at the time that I would have to face a few more challenges before things turned around.
Then, I had a car accident that caused life changing injuries that I still deal with to this day. I had been driving my teenager to school and was stopped at a light in the end of a school zone. As I sat looking at the SUV in front of me, I happened to glance up at the rear view mirror only to see a car coming at me full speed. I pushed my foot on the brake and braced as I warned my daughter of the quickly approaching impact thinking that would help. I do not remember much after. I saw my radio fly out of the dash and CDs seemed to be floating, while time seemed to slow to a crawl. It turned out that the accident had altered my life more than even the loss of my job. I thank God that the baby had not been in the car when I had the accident.
My car was totaled, and I was in a lot of pain. It was debilitating at times to the point I just could not function for long periods of time. At the time, I thought it would never get better. I was not sure how I was going to be able to work and earn an income sufficient to support my children. I was scared for my financial future. I needed flexibility because I was unable to sustain a regular job especially one that was full time at the time. I knew that I could not survive on disability and I needed a long term solution and fast. I had to figure out something soon. I was near to my breaking point.
It was then that my financial issues came to the fore again. I knew I was going to lose my home, because I couldn't keep up with payments and had fallen too far behind. I had started to try to move my things because I knew I would probably end up in this situation, but It still shocked me to come home and find a lock on my door and notice that I had been evicted and my home was being foreclosed upon. I ended up having to move myself and my two remaining children into my sisters spare room. Although I appreciated it, and thank God for her help, I also felt I had hit rock bottom. My sister had been unemployed and was trying to find a solution to her income struggles at the same time I had been. She was feeling the pinch and was concerned too. It was about that time that she approached me with this crazy idea! I couldn't believe what I was hearing.
My sister came into the room one day and she sat down and said "Lets start a home based business". I looked at her like she'd grown a second head with horns. I thought for sure I misheard, but she said it again. She must have seen the disbelief, because she started explaining why she thought it was a good idea. I told her I did not have money to invest, and was running out of time, but we sat and hashed it out. I felt at the end of the conversation that we honestly had nothing to lose. I was already struggling and did not have any money saved up at the time. I was headed towards bankruptcy, and my credit was nonexistent, so loans were out of the question. My sister had done her homework, though, and what she had found made sense to us both. By the time she had finished explaining what she was talking about, I had started to see a glimmer of hope.
For the first time in a long time, I was starting to feel like there might be a light at the end of the tunnel. It would not take much and had an excellent chance for success. I did not have employers knocking down my door. They were not even calling, so I decided to go for it. What did I have to lose, right? Now my sister gets to remind me every holiday season that she was right and I was wrong! It was one of the best decisions we have made in our lives and has helped us in ways that are immeasurable.
Since I started my business in the Spring of 2010, I have continued to grow it by adding services using information I have compiled about work-from -home and business opportunities over the years. In 2012, I co-published a book with my sister, entitled “Real Work at Home Opportunities” with this information which we had both used successfully. We were excited about all the opportunities that we discovered and wanted to share it with everyone else who was going through the same thing we were and looking for a solution to working from home. We wanted others to know that they could do it too. Fast forward ten years and I feel it has helped me grow more than anything else in my life. It has given me confidence and fulfillment which can only be gained by conquering that hurdle. Something that can never be taken away from me.
In the last ten years since I started my business, I have performed a wide variety of services for hundreds of companies, and a lot of very nice people, that I would have never had imagined myself doing. I was never good at speaking but have performed weddings! Normally shy, I have learned to step out of my comfort zone. I hate talking about myself, but I am now sharing a decade of my life in depth. I cannot begin to list all the other ways this has helped me grow.
It's been amazing and I would not change a thing! I cannot wait to share my stories, and I hope that by sharing so much of my experiences, I can give you the courage to do the same.
After starting with notary public and signing agent services, I added loss mitigation, field representative, site inspector, collections, telemarketing, tutoring children and adults, bookkeeping, and property preservation.
I have performed a lot of wedding ceremonies as an officiant and have performed a few baby ceremonies too, and that was so rewarding! Those ceremonies were my favorite of all the occupations I have had.
I had become licensed as a QuickBooks Pro Advisor and a Registered Tax Preparer for a time and helped a few people in that capacity.
I had sellers’ accounts with Amazon and e-Bay and was selling a wide variety of products and have been a secret shopper and participated in research studies and focus groups. I also have met so many intelligent, motivated, business minded individuals. Anytime I met someone doing something new and interesting, I would ask questions and take notes. I would then go home, and research more about the opportunity online.
When I need to supplement income now, I have the skills to find opportunities and the companies that hire, and I know how to go after and get the job. I want to share that knowledge with you. I want you to be able to do what I have done. No longer waiting for employers, and not knowing where to find the work. I want you to know what you have to offer, and to be able to market those skills and get paid.
I am amazed at all that I have learned and have been busy collecting information throughout my adventures. I have spent years using the information and sharing it with people that I met who expressed an interest in doing what I was doing. I wanted to repay Gods grace by paying it forward. I got to watch others take advantage of the opportunities too throughout the years to solve their need for income. It gives me immense pleasure to be able to see others experience the same results.
I have continued to grow my company since the last book, while also continuing my research on the subject and now I hope to inspire readers with a wealth of new information on work from home opportunities. I have enjoyed and appreciated the flexibility that it offers and it has saved my life!
My hesitance to start a home based business was out of fear of the unknown and a lack of mentorship and information. However, now I have a confidence that can only come by conquering the unknown, and I control how much I work and how much I make. I hope that my book, blog, podcast, and social media channels can fill that void making it possible for others to take control of their career and doing it with a greater probability of success so they can feel the way I do now.
I want you to be successful. Whether working from home as an employee, contractor, or business owner, it helps to have a community of like-minded people to support you, to network with, and to learn from and help each other. I believe that by sharing the information and my story, I can inspire others and help those who are feeling as desperate as I did. You deserve to experience the freedom of controlling your income and to be able to support your family. I believe the freedom to work and support your family should be the fundamental right of every human being.
By creating a blog, podcast and YouTube channel, I hope to help others to be able to take the information and act on it right away so they can start making money right away too. I will continue writing other books in the future on work- from- home opportunities as long as the need is there. I pray that my work inspires a following through innovation and imagination to explore and conquer work from home opportunities.
